What is an OBD-II Port Lock?

Your car has a small diagnostic port — usually tucked under the dashboard — that mechanics plug into to read fault codes and check your vehicle’s systems. Most drivers never think about it, but thieves have learned to exploit it too, using it to program blank key fobs or force a car to start without a key.

An OBD-II port lock is a simple physical device that blocks this port, preventing anything from being plugged in without your knowledge. It’s one of the more affordable and straightforward ways to add a layer of protection against a theft method that’s becoming increasingly common with modern vehicles.

How do the Locks Work?

These locks block a small port hidden inside your car — the same one mechanics plug into to check for problems. Thieves have learned to use this same port to trick your car into accepting a new key or starting without one altogether. The lock simply stops anything from being plugged in unless you remove it with the special tool

What Vehicles are OBD Port Locks Best For?

OBD-II port locks are beneficial for reducing the risk of theft of basically any modern car with a security key (learn how to tell here) or push-button start. If your car has basic steel keys that aren’t programmed to an immobilizer, thieves don’t need to plug into your OBD port to steal your car. While these are helpful in most modern cars, they are most important in high-value, high-risk cars that are commonly stolen with this method. Most notably Dodge Chargers/Challengers/Durangos, newer Jeeps, most modern General Motors vehicles, and Infinitis (just to name a few). However it is a wise investment for most vehicles made in the last 10+ years if you are worried about theft, as it will make one of the primary methods used much more difficult.
