Catalytic converter theft is a little different from most types of vehicle theft because the thief usually has no interest in taking the entire car. Instead, they crawl underneath and cut the catalytic converter out of the exhaust system so it can be sold for the valuable metals inside, including platinum, palladium, and rhodium. With a battery-powered reciprocating saw, an experienced thief may be able to remove an easily accessible converter in only a few minutes. Trucks, SUVs, and other vehicles with higher ground clearance are often attractive targets because thieves can get underneath them quickly without even needing a jack.
Unfortunately, the repair bill can be far higher than whatever the thief gets for the stolen converter. A replacement catalytic converter can cost hundreds or thousands of dollars, and a careless thief may also cut oxygen-sensor wiring, exhaust piping, or other nearby components in the process. Catalytic converter shields are designed to add a substantial physical barrier between the thief and the converter. They are not necessarily impossible to defeat, but forcing someone to cut through or remove a heavy shield adds time, noise, and difficulty to the theft, which can make your vehicle a much less appealing target.
