Gear shifter locks are a physical theft deterrent designed to prevent a vehicle from being shifted out of “park” (in automatics) or into gear (in manuals), making it significantly harder to drive away. These devices typically clamp around the gear lever or between the gear lever and handbrake, locking it in place with a key or combination mechanism. They work best on traditional PRNDL-style automatic shifters and manual transmission sticks, but typically won’t work on newer electronic or push-button shifters, which lack a mechanical linkage to secure. The main benefits include visual deterrence, ease of use, and compatibility with many older vehicles. However, downsides include added daily inconvenience, bulky storage, and the fact that determined thieves with tools could eventually cut or pry them off. Despite limitations, gear shifter locks can be a useful part of a layered anti-theft strategy, especially when combined with other physical and electronic security measures.
