What Are Pedal Locks?
Brake and clutch pedal locks are a simple physical security device designed to prevent a vehicle from being driven by blocking the pedal from being pressed. When properly installed, they can stop the car from being started or shifted into gear, adding another obstacle a thief must overcome. While they are not always as visible or convenient as steering wheel locks and can be a bit awkward to install and remove, they still add time, effort, and risk for a thief, which may be enough to make them move on to an easier target.
How Do You Use a Brake or Clutch Pedal Lock?
Steering wheel-to-pedal designs work similarly to a steering wheel lock (club). You extend the device, put the hooks around the pedal and the steering wheel, and then make sure it is locked tight so that the pedal cannot be depressed. Floor-to-pedal designs are typically placed over the thin metal part of the pedal and have a piece that must be tightened and locked. You will typically have to install from outside of the vehicle. Users who drive manual transmission cars typically install the lock on the clutch pedal instead of the brake.
What Are the Limitations of These Devices?
