
This article applies to Chevrolet Silverado, Tahoe, and Suburban, as well as GMC Yukon, Sierra, and Cadillac Escalade. It is primarily focused on vehicles equipped with push-button-start, as opposed to keyed ignition, which are the most vulnerable and commonly stolen, however many of the security measures will be applicable to standard-keyed cars as well. SUVs started receiving push-button-start in 2015, and the trucks started being equipped with it in 2019 (1500, new body style) and 2020 (HD). Not all vehicles in this year range had this option. The term “Late Model” is used to describe this article to differentiate it from our article on 99-07 GM Trucks and because it applies up to current year-model trucks and SUVs.
While 2004 may have took the cake as the most stolen model year of Chevy Silverado, the newer trucks are very heavily stolen as well across the U.S, and like most trucks, the problem is far more severe in areas near the southern border and many Texas cities like Houston. Organized crime is the most common culprit here, as these trucks are very valuable and so are their parts, and in border-adjacent areas cartel-affiliated organizations frequently take the vehicles to Mexico. General Motors is actually currently facing a lawsuit (not surprisingly out of Texas) that alleges that these trucks are too easy to steal due to “hackable” keyless entry technology. These trucks are stolen using numerous methods, including:
- Relay attacks– This is the type of theft where thieves duplicate your key fob’s signal and use it to unlock and start your truck (Learn more about relay attack theft here)
- Key Programming– Thieves can use locksmith tools to plug into the OBD port and create a new key for your truck within a matter of minutes
- OBD port “hacking”– In addition to programming new keys, some thieves are able to use devices plugged into the OBD port on these vehicles to force the vehicles to start without making new keys
- ECM Swap– Another way that these trucks are frequently stolen is by replacing the engine control module (ECM) of the truck to be stolen with an ECM that the thieves already have keys programmed to. This happens much quicker than you would think and only takes a few minutes for experienced thieves.
- CAN-Bus Hacking– Some thieves use special devices to hack into your truck’s CAN-Bus system through headlight wires or elsewhere, however this is not quite as common on these trucks as other methods (Learn more about car hacking here)
- Tow truck– While not extremely common, some thieves do use tow trucks, often posing as repossession agents. This type of theft is the hardest to prevent and a big reason why having trackers and early warning from alarms is important.

Choose the setup that’s best for you, your budget and your vehicle. There are many great products not listed in these examples that you may decide to use (see other products below). Just make sure to choose products you won’t mind using consistently.
What is important to include when building the layered defense for your GM Truck/SUV is:
- First and foremost, an immobilizer like IGLA or Ravelco. These vehicles are subject to such a wide array of theft types and you never know which one your thief will use. Both of these systems combat nearly every attack mentioned (except for towing, of course). Only go with simpler immobilizers if you have to, these trucks are almost always stolen by skilled thieves.
- Protection against relay thefts, like a Faraday box or pouch
- Physical blockage of the OBD port
- Visible deterrent like a club
- Physical Locking of Engine Control Module (ECM)
- (Preferably) a 2-way alarm system to notify you of theft attempts in real-time
- Non-OnStar Tracking Device
OnStar is very unlikely to be helpful in a theft, aside from potentially receiving initial alerts. Thieves stealing these trucks tend to know what they’re doing, and almost always disable the OnStar tracking nearly immediately, not to mention many users of the service report difficulty/delays in obtaining location information after theft.

Relocate Horn Wires
One thing that is very commonly reported with thefts, attempted thefts, and break-ins of GM trucks and SUVs is that thieves will disconnect or cut the truck’s horn wires through the opening in the grille prior to entering the vehicle. This is done to keep the alarm from blaring and avoid detection. Kits are available to extend the wires for relocation to an area not accessible from the grille, forcing them to make more noise or move on to another truck.
Immobilizing Devices
As stated before, these GM trucks and SUVs fall are stolen using a wide variety of theft methods, most of which are considered types of “car hacking” executed by sophisticated car thieves. Using a good, aftermarket immobilizing system can greatly reduce the chances one of these thieves will be successful. Many, if not most, of these systems can be used together, for increased protection against theft. IGLA and Ravelco are the most difficult to defeat and it is recommended to have one of these installed, preferably with an alarm system like Compustar or Viper, which also has a starter interrupt feature, albeit typically not as difficult for a determined thief, however when paired together creates a very strong defense. This combination is quite expensive though. Other options tend to not be quite as deeply integrated into your truck’s wiring, but this varies by device and skill of installer. If Ravelco/IGLA costs more than you want to spend, any other option is still far better than nothing, and the majority of thieves don’t want to sit there and risk being caught while they diagnose the problem.
- IGLA Anti-Theft System– The IGLA Anti-Theft System is an immobilizer that prevents a late-model GM truck or SUV from starting unless the driver enters a custom PIN sequence using the vehicle’s existing controls, such as steering wheel or dashboard buttons. Because IGLA integrates directly with the vehicle’s electronic network, it can provide strong protection against several theft methods used on GM trucks and SUVs, including key programming, relay attacks, ECM swapping, and CAN-bus manipulation. There are no additional key fobs or obvious visible components for a thief to locate, making the system difficult to identify and bypass. IGLA also includes a service mode, allowing the vehicle to be left with a dealership, repair shop, or valet without revealing the PIN. (Read more about IGLA here.)
- Ravelco– The Ravelco is a highly effective immobilizer that uses a unique removable plug, typically mounted discreetly beneath the dashboard or steering column. The system is wired deep into the vehicle’s wiring harness and disables multiple critical starting circuits whenever the plug is removed. Even if a thief successfully clones your key or performs a CAN-bus attack, the vehicle cannot be started without the plug installed. Just keep in mind that the Ravelco only provides this protection if you remove the plug and take it with you every time you leave the vehicle. (Read more about Ravelco here.)
- Many aftermarket alarm systems– Many aftermarket alarm systems also include a starter interrupt feature that disables the vehicle from starting whenever the alarm is armed. Installed costs vary widely depending on the system and features you choose, but you can generally expect to pay anywhere from about $500 to more than $1,000. While a starter interrupt adds another valuable layer of protection, it is generally not as resistant to a determined thief as dedicated immobilizers like IGLA or Ravelco. On the other hand, it is very easy to use consistently, since activating it is typically as simple as locking your vehicle with the alarm’s remote or key fob. (Read more on alarm systems here.)
- Kill switches– Kill switches are a more affordable type of immobilizer and, while they are not as effective as higher-end options, they are still far better than having no immobilization at all. A kill switch works by wiring a hidden toggle switch, push button, or magnetic switch into the vehicle’s starting system so the engine cannot be started unless the switch is in the correct position. Their main weakness is that they do not rely on a unique key, plug, or encrypted authorization. If a thief discovers the switch, they can simply activate it and start the vehicle. If you choose this option, take the time to hide the switch extremely well, and consider installing a non-functional decoy switch in a semi-hidden location under the dash to waste a thief’s time and increase the chances they’ll give up. Most mechanics and experienced DIYers can install a kill switch. (Read more about kill switches here.)
- JDI Ghost Power RFID Kill Switch– The JDI Ghost Power RFID Kill Switch is a discreet and effective immobilizer that uses a hidden RFID reader to prevent unauthorized starting. The vehicle will only start when a programmed RFID tag is present, effectively creating an invisible kill switch with no obvious switch or keypad for a thief to find. Without the RFID tag, the system interrupts power to critical circuits such as the ignition or fuel system, preventing the engine from starting even if a thief has a cloned or legitimate key. You will need to get the universal model, as they do not make a “plug & play” option for these vehicles. (Read more on Ghost Power Here)
- Cyclops TAM-The Cyclops TAM replaces a relay in your vehicle and can be switched on or off using the included remote. When turned off it will prohibit your car from starting unless the relay is replaced, or you turn it back on with your remote. . (Read more on Cyclops TAM here.)
- Remote Battery Disconnect Switches– A remote battery disconnect switch is an inexpensive theft deterrent that typically costs around $30 and is simple enough for most DIYers to install. It fits between the negative battery terminal and cable, allowing you to disconnect the battery with the press of a button on the included remote. The biggest drawbacks are that disconnecting the battery also disables most alarm systems, and a determined thief can usually bypass the device by opening the hood. Even so, it’s a worthwhile budget-friendly layer of protection. Many thieves won’t waste time troubleshooting a vehicle with no electrical power, and a disconnected battery can also prevent thieves using a cloned key from quietly unlocking and starting your GM truck or SUV. Aftermarket Alarm Systems

Adding a high-quality aftermarket alarm system to your late-model GM truck or SUV can be a worthwhile theft-prevention upgrade, provided you choose a reputable brand and have it professionally installed. Basic alarms that simply sound the horn do little to deter experienced thieves, as they are often ignored. Higher-end systems, however, can provide significantly better protection and are generally much more difficult to defeat than the factory security system. Depending on the model you choose, premium aftermarket alarm systems may include features such as:
- Starter Interrupt that prevent car from being started if alarm is armed.
- 2-way notifications that alert you via your key fob or phone when your alarm is going off.
- Shock sensors that set off alarm when vehicle is hit
- Audio glass break sensors that listen for your glass being broken
- Tilt Sensors that can detect if your vehicle is being towed or jacked up to steal wheels.
- Built in GPS
- Blinking light for deterrence

OBD Port Lock
Thieves who using a locksmith programming tablet or custom-made car hacking device to plug into your car’s OBD-II port and make a new key/start the car is one of the most common ways of theft for these trucks and SUVs. Using an OBD port lock to restrict their ability to plug in is an inexpensive but effective way to deter most thieves using this method. Don’t forget that these do not protect against relay theft, key cloning, CAN Bus attacks, ECM swaps, etc. so while they are important and effective, they should be paired with other defenses. Engine Control Module Lock
One way these GM trucks are frequently stolen, is by thieves swapping out your existing engine control module for one they already have keys programmed to. They can pop your hood and get the module swapped in a matter of minutes. While good immobilizers like IGLA and Ravelco can still prevent the vehicle from starting, you can take it a step further (and prevent problems from having your ECM removed) by installing a device like the Croc Loc that physically blocks access to your ECM.
The Club Steering Wheel Lock

Steering wheel locks are an inexpensive and effective visual deterrent for late-model GM trucks and SUVs. Many thieves will spot the brightly colored lock and simply move on to an easier target before causing any damage. While a determined thief can defeat most steering wheel locks quickly with the right tools, they still add an important layer of security, but need to be combined with other anti-theft measures. Considering their relatively low cost, they’re one of the better values in vehicle theft prevention. (Read more about clubs here.)
Brake Pedal Locks
Brake pedal locks come in a variety of designs, but they all work by preventing the brake pedal from being depressed, which can stop the vehicle from being started and/or shifted out of park. Like steering wheel locks, they add another obstacle for a thief to overcome. However, they aren’t as noticeable as a steering wheel lock, making them less of a visual deterrent, and they’re generally a bit less convenient to install and remove every time you drive. “Boots”/Wheel Locks

Wheel boots, commonly seen on illegally parked vehicles, are also available for personal use and can deter theft of GM trucks and SUVs. Though somewhat inconvenient to install, they prevent the vehicle from being moved unless removed or cut off. Used alongside other security measures, they can delay thieves and increase the likelihood of deterring a theft attempt. These can be a good additional step when leaving your vehicle parked for extended periods of time. (Read more about wheel locks here.)
Removing a Fuse

One free way to make your GM truck or SUV more difficult to steal is to remove a fuse or relay that’s required for the engine to start and take it with you. Most thieves aren’t going to spend time diagnosing why a vehicle won’t start and will simply move on to an easier target. If you’re comfortable working under the hood, you can use your owner’s manual to identify a suitable fuse or relay, or ask a mechanic to show you which one to remove. Avoid removing anything related to your alarm system or components that could be damaged if the vehicle is cranked without them, and be careful not to lose the fuse while you’re away from home. Although a dedicated immobilizer is a much more convenient and reliable long-term solution, this can serve as an effective no-cost or temporary layer of protection.
Using a Faraday Pouch/Box For Your Key

These only are useful for GM trucks and SUVs equipped with push-button start keys/passive entry (which is what this article is primarily about). But if your vehicle is equipped with this feature, these devices are extremely important for preventing relay attack theft and other types of key cloning where thieves capture your key’s signal and use it to enter and start your vehicle. A faraday pouch is a little pouch that can block this signal from being detected, you can also get a faraday box for when you’re at home. The downside is that you will not be able to use the convenient functions of proximity keys while utilizing the pouch such as unlocking or starting your truck with the key in your pocket, but it may save your truck from theft. Keep in mind that this type of key cloning is not the only method used to steal these GM vehicles, so using a faraday pouch/box is not a foolproof security measure and should be used alongside other anti-theft devices. It is however, a cheap way of preventing a very common type of theft, and it’s crucial to at the bare minimum keep your keys in a signal-blocking box while at home, and away from the front door. Tracking Devices

You cannot rely on On Star for tracking in the event of a theft. Thieves know how to disable it and do so quickly after taking your vehicle. Aftermarket trackers, well-hidden deep inside your vehicle greatly increase the chances of recovery. Multiple devices reduce the chances of your tracking capabilities being disabled, having at least one wired and one wireless device is a good idea. While it’s more important to concern yourself with how to prevent theft from happening in the first place, it’s good to have a backup plan in place in case thieves are able to overcome security measures, you forget to use your anti-theft devices, or most notably, if they use a tow truck. Security Screws to Delay License Plate Removal

Once your main anti-theft setup is in place, license plate security screws are a cheap way to add one more layer of hassle for thieves. They require an uncommon bit to install or remove, which makes your Infiniti’s tag far harder to grab in a parking lot. If a thief does take the truck, they’re more likely to drive it with a plate that is reported stolen, increasing their chance of capture, even if only by a small amount. Security Measures When Parked at Home

- If you have a garage (and it’s big enough), use it– Parking your late-model GM truck or SUV inside a garage whenever you’re home is one of the simplest ways to reduce its risk of theft. It keeps the vehicle out of sight from thieves scouting neighborhoods at night, adds another physical barrier they must overcome, and makes a quick tow-away theft much more difficult.
- Use home security cameras and lighting– Help make your property a less appealing target by installing motion-activated floodlights and security cameras that cover your driveway, your GM truck or SUV, and other key areas around your home. While experienced thieves usually won’t be deterred, the added visibility and surveillance can encourage them to look elsewhere, and the recorded footage may provide valuable evidence if a theft or attempted theft does occur. - Block in your GM truck with lower risk cars– If you have a second vehicle that’s at lower risk of theft, consider parking it behind your GM truck or SUV in the driveway to make it harder to drive off or steal quickly.
- Install a driveway motion sensor– A driveway sensor can give you an early warning the moment someone comes onto your property at night, letting you react while a theft attempt is still happening rather than discovering it the next morning. (Read more about driveway motion detectors here)
- Consider installing a gate– It can be a large investment, but gates make things harder for thieves and make your house a less desirable target. They do occasionally bust through them though.
