Dodge Chargers and Challengers have become some of the most frequently stolen vehicles in the United States, and the top-tier models carry a genuinely startling level of risk. According to the Highway Loss Data Institute, Charger SRT Hellcats from the 2020–2022 model years were stolen at a rate more than 60 times higher than the average vehicle on the road — the highest theft frequency HLDI has recorded for any car. Non-Hellcat HEMI models weren’t far behind, at more than 20 times the average. If you own a Scat Pack, Hellcat, Redeye, or other HEMI-powered Charger or Challenger, you’re driving one of the most targeted vehicles in the country.

These cars are stolen for resale, stripped for parts, and often used by thieves to commit other crimes or take part in illegal street takeovers and racing. Skilled thieves can swap a stolen car’s VIN to resell it outright; others simply drive it as-is.

Thieves target Chargers and Challengers with both high-tech and low-tech methods. The most common high-tech approach exploits weak points in the keyless-entry and push-start system: criminals use relay attacks or CAN-bus intrusion near the headlight or fender to trick the car into thinking a valid key is present, unlocking and starting the engine in seconds. Others plug a programming tool into the OBD-II port to program a new key once they’re inside.

On the low-tech side, it’s also common for thieves to push or tow these cars away when they can’t get them started. Pulling the neutral release strap near the shifter lets the wheels spin freely, so a thief can roll or tow the car away from your driveway and take their time getting it running elsewhere — no hacking required.

Because these cars face risk from so many different angles, no single device is enough. The rest of this guide walks through the layered combination of tools that actually holds up against each of these methods.

Radio Frequency Hub Module (RFHM) Update

This update locks the ability to make new keys, and can be done at your local Dodge dealership (sometimes for free). It is recommended to get spare keys made before doing this update because if keys are lost later, you will have to replace the module as well as the keys. This update is a good idea to do, but keep in mind it won’t prevent other, non-programming theft methods like relay attacks.

Aftermarket Alarm Systems

Because Chargers and Challengers are stolen mostly through relay attacks, CAN-bus intrusion, and key cloning rather than smash-and-grab, a basic alarm that just blares the horn usually won’t do much. If you’re going to install one, it needs to do more than make noise.

A quality aftermarket system changes the equation. Look for one with a starter immobilizer — this is the feature that matters most for these models, since it keeps the car from starting even if a thief has already cloned your key or bypassed the factory security electronically. Beyond the immobilizer, look for a system with:

Blinking LED indicator – a cheap, passive deterrent that signals a system is armed before a thief commits to the attempt

Starter immobilizer – blocks the engine from starting while armed, even with a valid (or cloned) key

2-way notifications – alerts your phone or key fob the moment the alarm trips, so you’re not finding out the next morning

Shock sensors – trigger if the car is struck or tampered with

Audio glass-break sensors – listen for a shattering window even if the door itself isn’t touched

Tilt/tow sensors – especially relevant here, since Chargers and Challengers are commonly pushed or towed via the neutral release rather than driven off; a tilt sensor catches this even when nothing electronic is being tampered with

Built-in GPS – handy, though a dedicated tracker (covered later in this guide) usually offers more reliable range and battery life

Immobilizing Devices

Since most newer Chrysler/Jeep/Dodge vehicles are very easy for thieves to bypass factory security measures, it is important to have a device to prevent your car from starting even if the key has been successfully cloned. There are many types of devices designed to prevent unauthorized people from starting your car. Here are some different options of immobilizing devices that can be installed in your Charger/Challenger/MOPAR vehicle:

  • Ravelco– The Ravelco is one of the most effective options to prevent your car from being started, however, it is likely going to be the most expensive, typically costing around $800-$1,000. Ravelco claims that in their over 48 years of production, not a single car with a properly utilized device has been stolen! And I cannot find any credible information to contradict this claim. It works by using a unique plug, typically located under your dash or steering wheel, that is discretely wired deep into your vehicle’s wiring harness, that disables a critical component of your starting system, leaving your vehicle unable to start when the plug is removed. It is important to remember that the Ravelco will not work if you fail to remove the plug and take it with you when you leave your vehicle. (Read more about Ravelco here.)
  • IGLA Anti-Theft System– An excellent choice for vulnerable MOPAR models, the IGLA Anti-Theft System is a high-tech, discreet vehicle immobilizer designed to prevent car theft by blocking the engine from starting unless a secret PIN code sequence is entered using existing vehicle controls, such as steering wheel buttons or window switches. The IGLA system is deeply integrated with the vehicle’s electronic network and is resistant to relay attacks, key cloning, and CAN Bus hacking. It does not require additional key fobs or visible devices, making it extremely difficult for thieves to detect or bypass. The system can also safely prevent theft while allowing the vehicle owner to switch it into service mode for maintenance without compromising security. (Read more about IGLA here.)
  • Many aftermarket alarm systems– In addition to all the other features, some models of alarm systems have a starter interrupt that will activate when the system is armed. These will greatly vary in cost depending on what you pick out, but will typically run you from around $500 to over $1,000 installed. The downside to the starter interrupt feature of alarm systems is that, generally speaking, they are easier for a thief to defeat than a Ravelco system, but they are a little easier to utilize consistently, as all you have to do is press the lock button on your alarm’s remote. You may be able to use both an alarm system and the Ravelco together for superior protection. (Read more on alarm systems here.)
  • Kill switches– Kill switches are a less effective immobilizing device, but are better than nothing if you’re looking for a cheaper option. Kill switches are installed by wiring a hidden toggle switch, button, or even magnetic switch to your car’s starting system in a way that can prevent the car from starting when the switch is turned off. These are not as effective as other options because they do not require a unique plug or remote to activate/deactivate the system. So, if a thief finds your switch, he’s back in business. If you go this route, I would recommend spending the time to find a really good hiding spot for the switch, and place an inoperable decoy switch semi-hidden under the dash to confuse the thieves.   • JDI Ghost Power RFID Kill Switch– The JDI Ghost Power RFID kill switch is a discreet and effective theft prevention device for MOPAR vehicles. This system uses a hidden RFID reader that only allows the vehicle to start when a programmed RFID tag is present—effectively acting as an invisible kill switch. Without the tag, power to the ignition or fuel system is cut, preventing unauthorized starting even if the thief has the key. While not necessarily as difficult to bypass as the Ravelco, it offers the major advantage of not having to remove a plug, or flip a switch to offer protection. JDI offers this product as a combo specifically for these cars with their Ghost Lock tracking system that allows you to disable your fuel pump remotely in the event of a theft as well as having real-time tracking capabilities.   • JDI Ghost Lock Tracking System/Remote Disable– The Ghost Lock doubles as both a tracking device and an immobilizer, and allows you to remotely disable your car from your phone (subscription required). This is available to directly fit Chargers, Challengers Jeep Trackhawks, and Ram TRX. (See more about Ghost Lock Here)
  • Remote Battery Disconnect Switches– This is another low-cost option, but it comes with it’s share of downsides. Remote battery disconnect switches are easy to install yourself, if you can change your car’s battery you will be able to install one of these. They can be bought on Amazon for around $30. These switches work by going between your negative battery post and battery cable, allowing your car’s battery to be “disconnected” with the touch of a button on the included remote. The 2 main cons to these devices are, first, disabling the vehicle’s battery will also disable alarm systems, second, a determined thief will be able to disable the system easily if they open the hood. It is still a worthwhile option, especially for those on a budget. Many thieves do not want to diagnose why your car won’t start or doesn’t have power. Having your battery disconnected can have the benefit of preventing thieves who clone your key fob from gaining entry to the vehicle inconspicuously, and may think their clone is not working.   • Cyclops TAM-The Cyclops TAM replaces a relay in your vehicle and can be switched on or off using the included remote. When turned off it will prohibit your car from starting unless the relay is replaced, or you turn it back on with your remote. While not as difficult to bypass as the Ravelco or other professionally installed devices, it is a good option that is much more cost effective (costing around $150) and can easily be installed yourself. “The Club” Steering Wheel Locks

Steering wheel locks (A.K.A “The Club”) are very common and affordable theft prevention devices. While they may be far from foolproof (many thieves will cut them or your steering wheel to remove), there are many thieves out there that will be deterred from attempting to take your car if they see one of these bright-colored devices on your steering wheel. Due to the high risk of theft for Chargers/Challengers and the low cost of this item, it’s really a no-brainer to buy and use a club, even if you have advanced measures like IGLA, Ravelco, alarms, etc. (Read more about clubs here.)

Many times when thieves cannot get a Charger or Challenger started, they decide to push your vehicle down the road to buy themselves more time, or perhaps even attempt to tow the car. They do this easily by pulling the car’s neutral release strap, located near the shifter, which allows the wheels to spin freely. This means simply having an alarm/immobilizer/tracking device is not nearly enough, as pushing/towing is far more common with these cars than other models. While a secure garage is definitely your best defense, adding a neutral strap cover plate that impedes and delays their access to the neutral strap is an important layer of security for these vehicles.

Brake/Clutch Pedal Locks

There are a variety of different types of pedal locking mechanisms, but all work by preventing the brake or clutch pedal from being pushed down, which can prevent it from being shifted or started. This adds another step a thief has to overcome, but is not as good of a visual deterrent as steering wheel locks and are a bit more of a pain to use regularly, as it will typically require standing outside the car to install. “Boots”/Wheel Locks

You’ve probably seen someone’s car get “booted” before for parking somewhere they shouldn’t. You can buy wheel locks like this too. They are not the easiest theft prevention measure to use every time you park, but it can be a very valuable tool for MOPAR owners who don’t have a garage because it will make a thief have to cut the boot off if they want to roll your vehicle elsewhere. It will help buy valuable time during a theft attempt when used with other products like an alarm. (Read more about wheel locks here.)

OBDII Port Lock

Many thieves who target Dodge Chargers and Challengers often use stolen locksmith programming tools to plug into vehicle’s OBD-II port, make a new key for the car, and drive off in a matter of minutes. Installing an OBD-II port lock can help by blocking easy access to your vehicle’s computer, forcing a thief to either damage the port or abandon the attempt. A broken port is far better than a stolen car. Keep in mind, though, that this is only one layer of protection, thieves can also use relay attacks or CAN-bus intrusion to get these cars started, so an OBD lock should be part of a broader security plan. Faraday Pouch/Box

The MOPAR vehicles that are currently plagued by theft are all equipped with push-to-start proximity keys, and are susceptible to relay attacks. This is where thieves steal your key fob’s signal and use it to unlock and start your car. Faraday pouches and boxes are a good way to combat this type of theft because they block the signal emitted by your key fob making thieves unable to capture it. Pouches are good for your pocket, however, you must take it out of the pouch when it’s time to start the car and put it back in when you leave the car. You will also not be able to enjoy features like proximity unlock with the key in the pouch, but it will protect you from these attacks when you’re out and about. A faraday box is a no-brainer to use even if you don’t want the hassle of using the pouch all the time, the majority of these types of thefts happen in your driveway at night so keeping your key in a Faraday box while at home is an easy and affordable way to add protection. Removing a Fuse or Relay

A simple, free way to help keep a Charger or Challenger from being started is to pull a fuse or relay that’s required for the engine to run and keep it with you. Many thieves won’t waste time trying to diagnose the car under pressure—they’ll usually move on (if they don’t roll it elsewhere to buy time). If you’re comfortable with basic mechanics, you can use the owner’s manual to identify the right fuse, or ask a mechanic to point it out. Just avoid pulling anything tied to your alarm system or anything that could cause issues if the car is cranked without it. While a dedicated immobilizer is easier and more reliable, this trick can be a useful extra layer of security or a no-cost option when your car will be parked for a while. It’s best to keep this method for just a temporary solution, as doing this regularly is not only a hassle, but has the potential to wear out connections over time if done frequently enough.

Tracking Devices

Hopefully, your anti-theft plan will be successful and you will never need a tracking device in your car, but if something goes wrong, you’ll sure be glad you made this investment. Police will be able to recover your vehicle much faster, and likely in better condition if you can give them a location from your GPS. Being able to track your vehicle can also give you peace of mind by allowing you to see the location of your car at any time, and can be helpful if you forget where you parked. There are many options for tracking devices available, some are wired into your car’s electrical system, some battery powered (with surprisingly good battery life) as well as utilizing different tracking technologies such as GPS, Cellular, and Bluetooth. Each has it’s pros and cons, so for the best protection, it is recommended that you use multiple devices. Security Measures When Parked at Home

  • If you have a garage, use it– Parking your Charger or Challenger inside whenever you’re home is one of the simplest ways to cut your theft risk, for two reasons: it forces a thief to commit an additional, noisier crime just to reach the car, and it takes your car out of sight for anyone scoping the neighborhood. Given how heavily these models are targeted, this is very important. That said, a garage isn’t an automatic guarantee. Break-ins do happen, and high-value, high-demand targets like Chargers and Challengers are exactly the kind of car that makes a thief bother trying. Treat the garage as one layer, not the whole plan: keep it locked, consider adding an alarm to the garage itself, and pair it with the other measures in this guide — a garage won’t stop a determined thief from pulling the neutral strap and rolling the car out if nothing else is protecting it.
  • Use home security cameras and lighting– Put extra pressure on thieves by having your driveway well lit with motion sensing floodlights and cameras pointed at your car and elsewhere on your property. Many thieves will not be deterred by this, but it is still a worthwhile step that makes your house just a little bit less desirable of a target, and the cameras will provide good evidence if anything happens.   • Block in your Dodge with lower risk cars– If you have a second vehicle that’s at lower risk of theft, consider parking it behind your Charger/Challenger in the driveway to make it more challenging to access.
